Marcellus and Utica mineral buyers are firms whose own sites say they buy in Pennsylvania, Ohio or West Virginia. Of 148 buyer, broker and listing sites in a public directory of mineral buyers, 24 name Pennsylvania, Ohio or West Virginia in their own words, and 14 more include it in longer lists of areas (AMR buyer ledger, Oct 2026). Each is quoted below with what it says it buys.
This page lists those buyers, what kinds of interests they say they buy, what their sites state about a sale, and the state rules on royalty payment and unclaimed money that apply in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. It is a list of statements, not an endorsement, with a ranked shortlist of three first. American Mineral Registry, which publishes this page, also buys; it is ranked and marked in the shortlist below, never in the counts.

Which three buyers fit a Marcellus or Utica interest?
Three buyers whose own words cover Appalachia. The first is ranked for its long Ohio record, American Mineral Registry for covering all three states and every other, and the third for its Marcellus and Utica focus; each one's own site shows where it stops.
1. Why is Gateway Royalty ranked first?
Gateway has worked with Ohio owners for years, including partial sales, but only in Eastern Ohio.
- Pro:
Gateway Royalty has worked with Ohio landowners who chose to sell only a portion of their minerals or royalties
(Gateway Royalty, LLC, Oct 2026). - Con:
For the past 13 years, we’ve worked exclusively with landowners in Eastern Ohio
(Gateway Royalty, LLC, Oct 2026).
2. Why is American Mineral Registry ranked second?
Publisher of this page. American Mineral Registry takes interests in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia and in every other state, so one request covers an owner with minerals in more than one place.
- Pro: it takes requests on interests in every state and the District of Columbia (American Mineral Registry, About AMR Research, Oct 2026).
- Pro: it takes royalties that pay monthly checks and mineral acres that are leased or unleased (American Mineral Registry, About AMR Research, Oct 2026).
- Pro: asking costs nothing, there is no fee when an owner sells, and nothing comes out of the price for American Mineral Registry (American Mineral Registry, About AMR Research, Oct 2026).
- Pro: the buyer pays the title search, title insurance and closing costs (American Mineral Registry, About AMR Research, Oct 2026).
- Con: usually it buys the interest itself and may resell it later; that is how it is paid (American Mineral Registry, About AMR Research, Oct 2026).
3. Why is Cavallo Mineral Partners ranked third?
Cavallo buys in the Marcellus and Utica across all three states and says the owner pays no costs.
- Pro:
You will not incur any costs to complete this transaction
(Cavallo Mineral Partners, LLC, Oct 2026). - Con: its buying is
focused on the Marcellus and Utica Shale formations
, so minerals elsewhere need another buyer (Cavallo Mineral Partners, LLC, Oct 2026).

Timing and paperwork, mostly. 15 state a time to close or pay; 4 say offers come in writing and 0 say who keeps royalties earned before closing.
What do they say about timing?
Most give a target in days or weeks. A target on a site is a statement, not a measured record. AMR's page on how long a sale takes compares them.

What payment rules apply in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio?
Pennsylvania and West Virginia set 120-day deadlines for unconventional or horizontal wells; no payment timing statute was found for Ohio. Ohio treats unpaid royalties as unclaimed after one year.
How fast must royalties be paid?
Within 120 days of first sale for Pennsylvania unconventional wells and West Virginia horizontal wells. AMR's page on royalties in suspense before selling covers held money.
- Pennsylvania requires payment
no later than 120 days from the date of the first sale of oil, gas or natural gas liquids
(Pa. Oil and Gas Lease Act, Apr 2024). - West Virginia sets a payment period
which shall not exceed 120 days from the first date of sale of oil, natural gas, or natural gas liquids is realized
(W. Va. Code 37C-1-3, Nov 2025). - Pennsylvania's deadline does not apply where
(i) There is a lack of marketable record title in the royalty owner. (ii) There is bona fide dispute concerning the royalty owner's interest. (iii) The owner of interest is missing or not able to be located.
(Pa. Oil and Gas Lease Act, Apr 2024).
Can unpaid or unused interests be lost in Ohio?
Unpaid royalties go to the state after one year, and Ohio courts have applied two statutes to old severed interests. AMR's reference on whether mineral rights expire covers the Ohio rules.
- Ohio:
funds owed or held as royalties, oil and mineral proceeds, funds held for or owed to suppliers, and moneys owed under pension and profit-sharing plans, held or owed by any holder unclaimed for one year from date payable or distributable
(Ohio Rev. Code 169.02, Sep 2022). - Ohio State University Extension reports on an Ohio Supreme Court case:
The Court ultimately held that a mineral interest holder’s interest may be extinguished by the Marketable Title Act or deemed abandoned by the Dormant Mineral Act, depending on the surrounding circumstances.
(Ohio State University Extension, Jan 2021).
Methodology and Sources
Buyers come from AMR's census of the 289 entries in Valor's public mineral buyer directory, read on October 8, 2026; 148 had a reachable site of a firm that buys, brokers, auctions or lists mineral interests. A buyer is listed only where its own words name Pennsylvania, Ohio or West Virginia, quoted and matched against the saved page; a region picker on a form does not count. State rules come from the statute text read for AMR's page on royalties in suspense, some through Internet Archive captures of the official pages. American Mineral Registry also buys; it appears only in the shortlist at the top of the page, marked as the publisher, never in the counts.
