Oil and Gas Law Books, Treatises and Journals: A Research Guide (2026)

Oil and gas law books fall into three kinds: treatises that practitioners cite, casebooks that students learn from, and journals that carry new work, several of them free. Here are the current editions of each, read on the publisher’s own page.

Where to look first

Oil and gas law lives in three kinds of source: multivolume treatises that practitioners and courts cite, casebooks and short texts that students learn from, and journals that carry new scholarship. The treatises are expensive and usually read in a law library or on Lexis or Westlaw; several of the journals are free.

How we checked

Every title below was read on its own page or filing on October 5, 2026, and each figure is given as that source states it. Nothing here is paid placement, and AMR earns nothing from any organization listed.

Editions and years come from each publisher’s own page or a university library catalog. LexisNexis store pages give edition numbers but not release years, so those are left blank rather than guessed.

Institutes

The Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law, formerly the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, has run since 1955; its annual institute papers and journal are on Westlaw and Lexis, and its oil and gas short course meets in Houston on October 21 to 23, 2026.

The Institute for Energy Law, part of the Center for American and International Law in Dallas, has held an annual energy law conference since 1949 and publishes its proceedings and a quarterly online newsletter.

Common questions

What are the main oil and gas law treatises?

Three national treatises: Williams & Meyers, Oil and Gas Law, now edited by Bruce Kramer and Patrick Martin; Kuntz; and Summers. Texas has its own, Texas Law of Oil and Gas.

Which oil and gas law casebook is newest?

Cases and Materials on Oil and Gas Law, ninth edition, published by West Academic on September 22, 2026.

Are there free oil and gas law journals?

Yes: the Oil and Gas, Natural Resources, and Energy Journal, the LSU Journal of Energy Law and Resources, the Energy Law Journal and the Natural Resources Journal publish their archives free.

Where can I read the statutes and cases themselves?

State legislature sites carry the statutes, and the Caselaw Access Project publishes older appellate opinions free; AMR’s Mineral Rights by State links each state’s statute.

Summary

Start with the Nutshell or a casebook, use Williams & Meyers or the state treatise for depth, and read the free journals for current debate. AMR’s royalty deductions list and lease clauses list apply that law state by state.
